Many people have this lingering perception that everything is going wrong in the U.S., and especially in Iraq, and that consequently our military MUST be having problems recruiting. There was a spate of stories a bit over a year ago making that case when the military was missing quotas for a few months, but of course no stories when they made up that shortfall and more in months later. Today we find out why the major media isn’t covering the issue anymore… because its a success story:
The U.S. Army has met its recruiting goals for twelve months in a row. The army continues to see above average (pre-911) re-enlistments by troops, especially those who have been to Iraq or Afghanistan.
…
The military tends to keep the recruits coming largely via word of mouth from existing troops and veterans, who are able to stay in touch via the Internet, and provide a quite different, and more credible, account of that is going on than the mass media. The troops think they are making a difference, that they are winning the war on terror. But that isn’t considered news.
No it isn’t news is it? Doubtlessly the reporters and editors in the mainstream media in their "news judgment" find that the Army succeeding to be a non-story. Certainly they don’t want to hear about it, anything that distracts from the "Iraq and the ’so-called War on Terror’ are a disaster" meme rarely gets covered.
So the Army fights on two fronts, with bullets and bombs against terrorists in overseas, and with words against the enemy here at home. Both work together to try to defeat the U.S. military. We’ll see who wins.
