There is lots of coverage of the much anticipated moment all the way around as the Democrat’s attempt to filibuster the nomination to the Supreme Court of Samuel Alito ended with a really loud flop, in a 75 - 25 vote in favor of ending debate and therefor the attempted filibuster. Sadly, my suggestion of last night was ignored and no Constitutional Option was exercised. Michelle Mallkin had the call, live blogging the meltdown of Sen. Kennedy on the Senate floor:
I am watching Sen. Ted Kennedy on C-SPAN unraveling before my eyes. He is screaming. The face is fire-engine red. The fists are waving furiously. Here’s my rough transcript of his ongoing diatribe smearing the Alito nomination as a step backwards toward mass discrimination:
Its entertaining if nothing else, go read it all and check out the link to the video too. Bravo to Senator Specter for running a good hearing and seeing the nominee through to a vote on the floor of the Senate as he promised. Barring some sort of world shaking disaster Judge Alito will become Justice Alito shortly after tomorrow morning’s vote in the Senate and the official swearing in later in the day. We can only hope that both Alito and Roberts over time keep their duty to apply and not make the law, fostering the continued Rule of Law that is so integral to our success as a nation.
Attention can now focus where it ought to be, on national policy and the many pressing issues that need the attention of our elected leaders. And next time maybe we can dispense with the drama and attempted character assassination and just focus on the candidates ability to do the job, as has been the tradition since the nation’s founding. Democrats who don’t like Republican appointees to the Courts have one certain means to change it. They are called elections, and that is how we settle the selection of appointments and policy in the oldest democratic republic in the world, the United States of America. That’s much harder than throwing a tantrum and fostering conspiracy theories while feeling aggrieved, but those things seldom get you anywhere in the world. Most of us learned that somewhere between the ages of 1 to 5.
